“Lost everything?” a hushed voice whispered at Chùa Nhân Hòa. The scent of incense hung heavy in the air, a fragile shield against the biting Warsaw winter. Chùa Nhân Hòa, a beacon of hope nestled in Warsaw, has become a sanctuary for over a thousand Vietnamese refugees fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. Built in 2014 by the Vietnamese community in Poland, it also serves as the Vietnamese Buddhist Cultural Center. Since February 2022, it has offered solace and support to those escaping the war. Some stay for a few days, others for weeks. All arrive carrying the heavy weight of “anxiety and mental turmoil.” They find respite, compassion, and a sense of community within these walls. The chief monk, Thích Tuệ Viên, has witnessed firsthand the toll the war has taken. He’s seen families arrive, their faces etched with exhaustion and grief. He’s heard stories of lives shattered, of 30-year careers reduced to nothing. “They come here with only the clothes on their backs, forced to start anew,” he shared. The temple, at times, has been filled to capacity, with hundreds seeking refuge simultaneously. Many learned of Chùa Nhân Hòa through the Vietnamese community or were guided by Polish volunteers. At the peak of the crisis, every room was packed. People even slept in the main hall. Some days, the temple provided shelter, food, and care to over three hundred individuals. The temple has relied on donations and the work of volunteers. Many within the community donate their time to drive, clean, and cook. The outpouring of support has been tremendous, with donations coming from individuals, families, and groups across Poland and Europe. The temple kitchen continuously serves hot meals and comforting vegetarian dishes to those in need. While Chùa Nhân Hòa provides essential physical needs, it also offers a space for emotional healing. “The temple’s atmosphere helps them cope with the trauma,” explained Thích Tuệ Viên. He spoke of the refugees’ deep sense of loss, not only of material possessions but also of their sense of direction. “When they fled, they ran for their lives,” he said. “Now, having escaped with their lives, they realize they’ve left everything behind…it’s heartbreaking.” Beyond immediate aid, Chùa Nhân Hòa represents the strength and resilience of the Vietnamese community in Poland. It’s a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of offering refuge in times of crisis. And in Warsaw, a city with a large Vietnamese population of 30,000, Chùa Nhân Hòa stands as a vital center for aid and community support.
