Hidden beneath Christuskirche Cologne a vaulted cellar whispers secrets. Legend claims the legendary Kolsch rock band BAP formed here. This isn’t just any church. Christuskirche stands as a testament to Cologne’s vibrant history and enduring faith.

Its story begins in 1894. A magnificent neo-Gothic hall church rose from the ground. Architects August Hertel and Skjold Neckelmann designed it. It boasted 1200 seats. The 77-meter tower became a Cologne landmark. It’s the second tallest church tower in the city. An impressive sight from the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring. Inside intricate decorations showcased the pride of Cologne’s growing Protestant community. Even Albert Schweitzer once played a concert on its old organ.

World War II brought tragedy. In 1943 the church was almost completely destroyed. Only the tower the rear gallery and the basement survived. The basement ironically offered refuge from the bombs. Many people survived the war there. After the war a simple hall church replaced the ruins. It held only 520 people. This was never meant to be permanent.

The desire for a modern building grew stronger. The old post-war building finally came down. From 2014 to 2016 a new architectural ensemble emerged. It blended the historical tower with a new nave and modern community spaces. Apartments and offices now share this space. The cherished basement remains a venue for events. The legacy of Joy Division’s 1980 concert lives on. This basement provided a unique setting for their only German performance.

The new Christuskirche is stunning. Its simplicity and clean lines are captivating. Artist David Schnell designed the windows. They fill the church with light and color. The church changed with its people. It remains a reliable haven in the bustling city. The new Christuskirche offers a blend of the old and the new. It’s a place of worship community and history. It stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal. It continues to inspire and serve the people of Cologne. Visit Christuskirche. Experience its remarkable story.
