Did the Christus-Kirche Gerlingen always have this name? No. We stand before the Christus-Kirche Gerlingen on Schulstraße. Its story begins in 1872 with the first service of the Evangelischen Gemeinschaft. This took place in Georg Zimmermann’s home. The present building arose much later. In 1925, the community celebrated the opening of their new church. An interesting nickname arose in the postwar period. American Methodists provided food aid. These donations led locals to dub the building the “Schmalzkirchle” or “lard church.” The name Christus-Kirche came much later. In 1968, the Evangelischen Gemeinschaft and Methodist Church merged globally. This created the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche (EmK). With this union, the church on Schulstraße received its current name, Christus-Kirche Gerlingen.
