How about a story about a chapel hidden within a military base? This is the Christopherus-Kapelle in Cologne. It is not just any chapel. This chapel has a unique story. It stands within the Lüttich-Kaserne. The Bundesamt für das Personalmanagement der Bundeswehr has its headquarters here.

The Christopherus-Kapelle is a protected monument. It was built in 1957. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Christopher. He is the patron saint of travelers. The Christopherus-Kapelle is named after him. It is one of the fourteen Holy Helpers.

You cannot simply walk in here. The Christopherus-Kapelle is not publicly accessible. But you can see it from Militärringstraße through the fence. It was added to Cologne’s list of monuments on July 23, 2003. Its number is 8624.

From 1951 to 1963 Belgian forces used the Lüttich-Kaserne. They used the Christopherus-Kapelle as their garrison church. They handed the barracks over to the Bundeswehr in 1963. The Belgians called the site Knesselare Kazerne. That was in Flemish. In French, it was Caserne Knesselaere.

Services are held in the Christopherus-Kapelle. These services are for the personnel stationed in the barracks. This includes Fernmeldeausbildungsverband 70. It also includes the Schule für Personal in integrierter Verwendung. The Stammdienststelle der Bundeswehr is included too.

Today the Bundeswehr uses it. They use it for military chaplaincy purposes. In July 2024 the new military pastor was introduced. This took place in the Christopherus-Kapelle. Dr. Bernhard Felmberg, the Protestant military bishop in Germany, led the ceremony.

The Christopherus-Kapelle stands as a symbol. It represents faith and history. It stands within a place dedicated to service and defense. It is a reminder of Cologne’s layered past.
