How about a Christmas story? No, not just any Christmas story. A story connected to this green space we’re standing in: Christman Park. While Christman Park itself may not be directly tied to grand holiday tales, Washington, D.C., where it resides, absolutely bursts with Christmas spirit.

D.C. truly embraces the holiday season. From late November, a special magic fills the air. The city transforms into a winter wonderland. So let’s spin a tale weaving together local holiday traditions with the spirit of community that Christman Park embodies.

Imagine it’s early December. Dusk settles over Christman Park, casting long shadows across the grass. You’ve just left the hustle of holiday shopping. Now, you seek a moment of peace before heading home. But what’s that twinkling in the distance?

Following the soft glow, you find yourself near the White House. It’s the National Christmas Tree! This tradition began in 1923. First Lady Grace Coolidge allowed D.C. public schools to erect a Christmas tree on the Ellipse, just south of the White House. President Calvin Coolidge himself lit the 48-foot Balsam fir. It was a gift from his home state of Vermont. Can you imagine the crowd of 3,000 enthusiastic spectators?

The tradition evolved. From 1924 to 1953, live trees graced the White House grounds. In 1954, the “Christmas Pageant of Peace” was born. Smaller trees representing each state, territory, and D.C. formed a “Pathway of Peace.” Each boasts unique decorations made by artists from their home.

Now, the National Christmas Tree is a living Colorado blue spruce. It was planted on the Ellipse in 1978. Each year, the current President participates in the lighting ceremony. Musical guests perform. The ceremony is broadcast on CBS.

Think about the 2024 National Christmas Tree, a 35-foot red spruce from Virginia. You can visit it for free. Take a closer look at the smaller trees. Notice the ornaments crafted by students from each state. They show off the spirit of their home. California’s tree might have palm trees. You might see a beach scene or the Golden Gate Bridge.

Before heading back to Christman Park, grab a warm drink from a nearby coffee shop. Swing’s Coffee, La Colombe, or Zeke’s are all great options. Many families have collected each year’s White House Christmas Ornament.

The spirit of Christmas fills the air in Christman Park. It connects to the heart of the nation’s capital. You’ve stepped away from a small community green space. But now, you are immersed in a larger tradition of peace, unity, and holiday cheer. That spirit resonates throughout the city and in every heart, young and old. As you return to Christman Park, carry with you the warmth of this special Washington, D.C., Christmas memory.
