In 1985, a rehab farm for male drug abusers was established in Kam Tin. This marked the humble beginnings of what would later become Christian Zheng Sheng College. We stand now at the site of a remarkable institution. Christian Zheng Sheng College is dedicated to helping young people overcome drug addiction and other challenges. Officially registered as a private school in 1998, Christian Zheng Sheng College is a unique institution in Hong Kong. It provides a structured learning environment combined with rehabilitation services. The college’s founder and principal, Alman Chan, believes in a holistic approach to education. The goal is to correct problematic behaviors through “life education”. This involves not just academic studies, but also vocational training and character development. The college relies heavily on school fees and boarding fees. Public donations cover less than 10 percent of their needs. Teachers at Christian Zheng Sheng College even take a 20% pay cut to support the school’s mission. The principal himself takes a 40% reduction. The college has faced its share of controversy. In 2009, the sponsoring organization, Christian Zheng Sheng Association (ZSA), was investigated by the ICAC. This followed allegations of questionable investments. The ICAC later cleared ZSA of any wrongdoing. The college even faced opposition when it tried to relocate to larger premises in Mui Wo. Residents protested the move, worried about having former drug addicts in their community. Despite these challenges, Christian Zheng Sheng College remains committed to its mission. It offers a beacon of hope for young people seeking a second chance at life. The students here aren’t just recovering from addiction. They are learning valuable life skills, rebuilding their self-esteem, and preparing for a brighter future.
