1961. Two congregations, Gorsuch Methodist Church and Louis Memorial Congregation, merged. They formed a new entity. This entity was Christ United Methodist Church in Washington D.C. Initially, they worshipped at the former Louis Memorial site. But the search for a new home began immediately. Christ United Methodist Church found its place at 4th and I streets SW. The site dedication occurred on Sunday, December 10, 1961. It marked a new chapter for the church. This was the first groundbreaking for a new church in the redeveloped Southwest. The official groundbreaking ceremony followed on Sunday, May 13, 1962. The cornerstone was laid on Sunday, October 21, 1962. The inaugural service was a joyous occasion. It took place on Palm Sunday, April 7, 1963. Christ United Methodist Church has seen a succession of spiritual leaders. Reverends Lester K. Welch, Carroll L. Yingling, Don Bruce Lowe, and Cathryn B. Moore guided the congregation. Then came Reverends Esther M. Holimon, Wendy J. Shenk-Evans, Joan H. Coates, and Arlester Brown (Interim Pastor). More recently, Reverends Jason L. Robinson, Adrienne Terry, E. Allen Stewart (Interim Pastor), and the current Pastor, Monica Raines have led Christ United Methodist Church. Their leadership has shaped the church’s identity.
