Once, Choutokuji Temple belonged to the Ii family. They were lords of the Hikone domain during the Edo Period. Over time, the Ii family donated cultural assets and family heirlooms to Choutokuji Temple. The Ii family’s cemetery is on the grounds. You can see monuments and tombstones of important family members. Since 2008, the cemetery is a national historic site.

The pagoda Sanju-no-to is especially beautiful in autumn at Choutokuji Temple. There is also a tea room called Muni-an. It has views of a pretty Japanese garden. The main temple gate is called Sanmon Hekiunseki.

If you look closely at the pagoda Sanju-no-to at Choutokuji Temple, you’ll see intricate carvings. The 12 Zodiac animals are depicted. Look for cat carvings near some of the zodiac animals. They play on the theme that the cat was tricked out of becoming a Zodiac animal. But the cat can still get along with the other animals.

To get to Choutokuji Temple, you can take a train. From Shinjuku Station, take the Odakyu Line to Gotokuji Station. Then, walk for 15 minutes. You can also take the Setagaya Line from Sangenjaya Station to Miyanosaka Station. Then, walk for 5 minutes to Choutokuji Temple.
