“Did those walls see Beethoven?” a young man whispered, clutching his well-worn violin case. He stared up at the imposing facade of the Chotkovský palác. “Beethoven? Here?” I chuckled, drawing the group’s attention to the young musician. “This grand palace, my friends, has indeed rubbed shoulders with musical history.” The Chotkovský palác stands as a testament to Prague’s rich past. Before it became the elegant palace you see today, it was once a collection of Baroque houses. One of them, known as “U Zlatého Pelikána” (At the Golden Pelican), belonged to the renowned violinist, Jan Jiří Hellmer. Now, legend has it that the great Ludwig van Beethoven himself was a frequent visitor to Hellmer’s house, even borrowing a violin for a time. The current palace, with its stately Empire style, arose from renovations commissioned by Marie Gabriela z Rottenhanu in the early 19th century. It later passed into the hands of the Chotek family, who left their own mark on its legacy. Look closely at the facade, stretching out with its 20 window axes and punctuated by those grand entrance portals. It whispers of a time when horse-drawn carriages rolled through these very arches. Even the floods of 1890 and 2002 couldn’t dampen its spirit. Today, the Chotkovský palác, fully restored, houses embassies and cultural centers. But who knows, perhaps on a quiet night, you might still hear a faint echo of a violin, a whisper of Hellmer and Beethoven. Perhaps the young man’s question wasn’t so far-fetched after all.
