In 1998, a humble commercial building was erected in Cologne-Feldkassel. Little did anyone know this unassuming structure would become the Chorweiler Zentralmoschee, a beacon of faith and community. Originally home to a civil engineering firm, this building in the Morsestrasse, within the Feldkassel industrial area of Cologne’s Chorweiler district, was destined for a greater purpose. In 2005, the newly established DITIB – Turkish Islamic Community of Chorweiler e.V. purchased the building. The community, eager to establish a mosque, saw the potential within these walls. They envisioned a space where the Muslim population of Chorweiler, particularly those from the nearby neighborhoods of Chorweiler and Seeberg, could gather, pray, and connect. The Chorweiler Zentralmoschee, or Chorweiler Merkez Camii in Turkish, officially opened its doors in 2008. The transformation from commercial space to mosque was remarkable. The former warehouse was converted into a prayer hall, adorned with classic Turkish architecture and featuring a women’s gallery. The prayer hall, including the gallery, can accommodate up to 400 worshippers. The old workshop became a multipurpose event hall. The Chorweiler Zentralmoschee is more than just a prayer hall. It is a vibrant community center, housing classrooms, a boardroom, a kitchen with dining facilities, a youth center with recreational and sports areas, a barbershop, a tea room, laundry rooms, and even the Imam’s office and living quarters. A lending library is integrated into the Imam’s office. The partially covered courtyard serves as a parking lot and an open-air venue for community events. The Chorweiler Zentralmoschee quickly became a hub of activity. Since 2009, the mosque has hosted nightly communal Iftar dinners during Ramadan. Starting in 2012, an annual Intercultural Iftar dinner brings together guests from various religious communities, including Christian churches, along with local police, politicians, and other representatives of Cologne society. The mosque also actively participates in local cultural events, showcasing its presence with booths and performances at the annual “Fest der Kulturen” in Chorweiler. The Chorweiler Zentralmoschee has also faced adversity. It has been the target of several anti-Muslim acts, including hate speech and vandalism. Despite these challenges, the community remains resilient. They responded to the 2015 refugee crisis with a fundraising campaign and provided support to refugees housed in the Chorweiler district. The Chorweiler Zentralmoschee is a testament to the power of community and the importance of interfaith dialogue. It is a place where faith and culture intertwine, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for all.
