“Lotus flowers from seeds eight centuries old” could be a story title for Chuson-ji Temple. This temple whispers tales of ancient warriors’ dreams. Founded in 850 Chuson-ji Temple is a serene mountaintop temple. The temple is located in Hiraizumi between Ichinoseki and Oshu. You get a glimpse into Japan’s frontier history here.

In the early 12th century large-scale construction occurred at Chuson-ji Temple. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. As you walk, notice how a forest path leads to the temple. The simple yet elegant beauty of the temple evokes a sense of profound serenity.

Chuson-ji Temple was built to placate spirits. These were spirits of those who died in bitter conflicts. Fujiwara no Kiyohira wished to create a peaceful state. He based it on the principles of Buddhism.

At its height Chuson-ji had more than 40 halls and pagodas. There were over 300 monks’ residences. After 100 years the temple complex declined. This happened during a period of political strife. Only two temple structures survived a massive fire in the 1300s.

Don’t miss Konjikido. The Golden Hall is a gold-covered pavilion built in the 12th century. It testifies to the fine craftsmanship of the time. The decorations use mother-of-pearl inlays. Woodwork metalwork lacquer-work and paintings adorn the hall.

Another highlight is the Chusonji sutras. These are Buddhist scriptures penned in silver and gold.

Much of the temple has been rebuilt after its decline. The Konjikido remains as it was when first built. The Konjikido is completely covered in gold leaf. It is inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

A kind of lotus flower grows here. It is known as the Chusonji lotus. It was germinated from 800-year-old seeds. These seeds were found within the Konjikido. The lotus flowers bloom in July just as they did centuries ago.

Tsukimizaka Slope is the main approach to Chuson-ji. Cryptomeria trees line the path. The Date clan of Sendai planted them three to four centuries ago.

The Hondō Main Hall is where services and rituals are conducted. Twenty to 23 monks work here. The Main Hall was rebuilt in 1909.

The Sankōzō Museum preserves Chuson-ji’s treasures. It houses more than 3000 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Buddhist statues sutras and burial items are among them.

Remember to check out the three stamp locations. You can find them at the main hall Sankōzō and Konjikidō. There are 11 locations if you include the sub-temples.

As you leave Chuson-ji Temple consider the dreams of Hiraizumi’s Ōshū Fujiwara. Reflect on the blessings of the Buddha. The temple closes at 5:00 pm. In winter it closes earlier at 4:30 pm.
