From bare rocks rose Choi Fook Estate. This wasn’t just any housing development. It transformed a former quarry. Now thousands call it home.
Choi Fook Estate stands proudly in Ping Shan Kowloon. It’s a public housing estate a testament to Hong Kong’s dedication to providing affordable homes. Its construction wasn’t a simple undertaking. It spanned several phases. The first phase saw the completion of Choi Hay House Choi Lok House and Choi Sin House. Residents moved in starting July 30 2010. An elderly community centre opened alongside them a vital hub for the growing community.
Phase two followed quickly adding Choi Foon House in 2011. But the story of Choi Fook Estate didn’t end there. Phase three a more ambitious project began in 2016. This phase included a three-story platform. It houses a gymnasium and a wet market a vibrant heart for the estate. Atop this platform stands Choi Wo House a striking 37-story residential building.
This final phase dramatically increased the estate’s capacity. It added 950 units housing approximately 2900 people. The initial plans were even grander. They aimed for 1110 units. The Hong Kong Housing Authority’s application to relax height restrictions allowed for this expansion. Choi Wo House completed in 2020 welcomed its first residents in March 2021.
Today Choi Fook Estate thrives. It’s a vibrant community. The 2016 census recorded a population of 9075. The median age is 40. The majority of its residents are of Chinese ethnicity. The estate isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a microcosm of Hong Kong life a testament to its resilience and its commitment to its people.
