Surrounded by the everyday sounds of Tokyo stands Chitose-yu. It is more than just a public bath. Chitose-yu connects us to a legacy of wellness.

The name “Chitose” may sound familiar. It echoes in the world of martial arts. It is linked to Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose. He was the founder of Chito-ryu karate.

Born in Okinawa in 1898, Tsuyoshi Chitose was a medical expert and karate master. He blended Chinese martial arts with modern medicine.

Chito-ryu karate focuses on soft techniques rather than hard power. It aims to create strength for self-defense. This style incorporates biomechanics. It avoids physical harm during training.

Dr. Chitose’s early training began at age seven. He learned from masters like Aragaki Ou. He also studied with Higaonna Kanryo and Kyan Chotoku.

In 1922, Chitose moved to Tokyo. He studied medicine at Tokyo University. Later, he assisted Gichin Funakoshi. Funakoshi was teaching karate at the university.

After World War II, Dr. Chitose opened his dojo named Yoseikan in 1946. He eventually named his style Chito-ryu. “Chi” means thousand. “To” refers to the Chinese Tang Dynasty. Therefore, Chito-ryu means “The thousand-year-old Chinese way.”

Though Dr. Chitose’s life ended in 1984, his legacy lives on. His son, Yasuhiro Chitose, continued his father’s work. He became the new Soke.

So, as you relax in Chitose-yu, consider this connection. The bath shares a name with a unique martial art. Both emphasize health and well-being. Perhaps it is more than a coincidence. Both reflect a journey to find balance and strength.
