The church’s humble beginnings are remarkable. A missionary couple Dr and Mrs Vokes played a crucial role. They sold their possessions to help secure the initial down payment on the building. Their dedication laid the foundation for what the church is today.
Early services were intimate affairs. Attendance was low. Cantonese and English were the languages used. Members translated sermons. The congregation grew steadily. God’s grace is evident in this growth.
As the congregation expanded so did the need for space. The church acquired the adjacent property. They demolished the existing buildings. A new larger structure replaced the old Victorian house. The current impressive building stands as a symbol of the church’s flourishing community. The third floor was added in 1983.
Today the Chinese Gospel Church of Toronto thrives. It has multiple congregations. Services are held in Cantonese Mandarin and English. The church’s Scarborough site also serves many people.
