Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Washington D.C., the Chinese Bible Church stands as a testament to faith and community. The church’s story begins in 1935, a beacon for the Chinese community in the nation’s capital. It was the first of its kind and remains the oldest Chinese church still active in D.C. The Chinese Bible Church wasn’t always at its current location at 500 I Street NW. The congregation journeyed through various locations, primarily between Mount Vernon Place and 1011 L Street NW. The church’s current home has a rich history of its own. Constructed in 1852 by Thomas Ustick Walter, the architect of the U.S. Capitol dome, the building has served as a Presbyterian church, a Jewish synagogue, and a Corinthian Baptist church. The Chinese Bible Church acquired this historic building in 2006. Initially, services were held in English and Cantonese. However, with the passage of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, the demographics of the Chinese community shifted. More Mandarin speakers arrived in D.C., leading the church to introduce Mandarin services in 1999. Today, the Chinese Bible Church embraces its multicultural identity. It offers services in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The church also offers a Sunday School program for all ages, taught in multiple languages. This reflects the church’s commitment to inclusivity and its mission “To Know Christ and to Make Him Known.” Beyond its religious services, the Chinese Bible Church acts as a community center. It provides social programs that connect members and offer support through the Chinatown Service Center. The church’s dedication to its community is reflected in programs like the Couple’s Club and the Women’s Club. While some historical groups are no longer active, their legacy lives on, inspiring current initiatives like the Cool Church Kids. The Chinese Bible Church has witnessed and participated in the evolving narrative of D.C.’s Chinese community. It remains a vital hub, offering spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging to generations past, present, and future.
