Were you aware that this grand building we stand before was once a cinema? The China Theatre, a Stockholm landmark since 1928, has worn many hats over the years. Originally envisioned as a grand movie palace, the China Theatre was the brainchild of builder Carl Zetterberg. He partnered with Svensk Filmindustri to create a space that could host both cinematic spectacles and theatrical productions. The design, inspired by Chinese architecture, was entrusted to Albin Stark, an architect familiar with the style from his time working in China. The building itself is an ode to 1920s classicism. Look above the entrance, see the inscription on the rectangular stone slab? Those Chinese characters translate to “The House of Perfect Sight”, a fitting tribute to its cinematic beginnings. The China Theatre opened its doors with Greta Garbo’s silent film “Anna Karenina”, a glamorous start to its journey. While it served as a cinema for many years, the theatre also hosted summer revues, variety shows, and even productions from Dramaten. Over time, it transitioned fully into a theatre, finally ending its run as a cinema in 1980. Today, the China Theatre remains a cultural hub in Stockholm, hosting a range of productions from musicals to comedies, leaving its cinematic past behind.
