“A church built for a brotherhood, can you imagine?” whispered a curious visitor, her eyes wide with wonder as she gazed upon the Chiesa S.S. Maurizio e Lazzaro. The Chiesa S.S. Maurizio e Lazzaro, a beacon of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, has a rich and layered history. It began life in the late 17th century, not as a grand basilica, but as a testament to the devotion of the Confraternita della Santa Croce. This brotherhood commissioned the talented Antonio Bettino to erect this sacred space. The Chiesa S.S. Maurizio e Lazzaro’s story took an interesting turn in 1729. It was then that the church transitioned to the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, becoming their cherished basilica. You can almost feel the echoes of their presence in this hallowed hall. Look closely at the Neoclassical façade. It is the work of the renowned architect, Carlo Bernardo Mosca. The statues that grace the facade depict the very saints the church is named after, Saints Maurice and Lazarus, meticulously crafted by the skilled hands of Giovanni Albertoni and Silvestro Simonetta.
