Did the Badoer family ever imagine their modest 7th-century church would become the Chiesa di Sant’Antonin we see today? This church in Venice’s Castello district has seen centuries of change. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonin we admire now isn’t the original structure. It was first rebuilt in the 12th century. Then again in 1680, thanks to the designs of Baldassare Longhena, the architect behind Venice’s iconic Santa Maria della Salute. Look up at the elegant bell tower. It’s a later addition, completed in 1750, possibly designed by the parish priest Antonio Fusarini. Inside the Chiesa di Sant’Antonin, art and history intertwine. The chapel on the left, dedicated to St. Saba, boasts frescoes by Alessandro Vittoria and Sebastiano Ricci. Ricci’s ceiling fresco portrays Saints Saba and Antonin, a testament to the church’s dedication. Lazzaro Bastiani’s altarpiece, depicting a Deposition, originally came from the church of San Severo, adding another layer of history to this sacred space. Another chapel, commissioned by the Tiepolo family, showcases Palma il Giovane’s depictions of San Saba’s life. This chapel also holds a special relic, said to be the remains of San Saba, brought from Acre during the 13th-century War of Saint Sabas. The bust of Alvise Tiepolo, crafted by Alessandro Vittoria, further enriches this chapel’s artistic heritage. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonin is more than just a church. It’s a testament to Venice’s rich history, artistic patronage, and enduring faith.
