Hidden within Trieste’s Sant’Andrea neighborhood stands the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo e Santa Rita da Cascia. Its story begins not with grand architecture but a humble chapel. In 1936 a small chapel dedicated to Santa Rita da Cascia opened. It was nestled in the basement of a private home. For years it served the spiritual needs of the local community. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo e Santa Rita da Cascia’s significance grew. On August 1 1961 it was elevated to parish status. Its territory was separated from the B V del Soccorso parish. It took on its current name honoring both the neighborhood’s patron saint and the chapel’s dedication. Officially recognized in 1986 the parish thrived.
The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo e Santa Rita da Cascia’s story continues with ambitious growth. In the early 1960s construction began on a new church and parish complex. Architects Foschini and Valle designed the stunning building. On October 29 1967 Archbishop Antonio Santin consecrated the new church. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo e Santa Rita da Cascia finally had a proper home. Independent parish activities started on May 22 1968. Since then the parish has meticulously kept its records.
Today the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo e Santa Rita da Cascia is a vibrant center of faith. It serves approximately 4630 people. The parish office is located on Via Locchi. The church itself is also on Via Locchi. Father Samuele Cecotti currently serves as the parish priest. He is assisted by other clergy members. The parish also includes a youth center located on Via Franca. Its history is one of humble beginnings and remarkable growth.
