Step into the Chiesa di Sant’Alvise, a sanctuary in the Cannaregio district of Venice. Its history is as rich and layered as the city itself. Originally, a convent church, Sant’Alvise was dedicated to Saint Louis of Toulouse according to tradition. It began as a commission by a noble Venetian woman, Antonia Venier, in 1388, inspired by a dream in which the saint appeared to her. You can still see remnants of the original structure in the 15th-century barco, or raised choir, supported by columns and buttresses. It connects the church to the nearby convent, offering a glimpse into the past. This raised structure is one of the earliest known examples of its kind in Venice. Today, the church, as we see it, is the result of a thorough renovation in the 17th century. The magnificent ceiling frescoes by Antonio Torri and Pietro Ricchi, painted during the restoration, are a testament to the Baroque era. Their daring perspective creates an illusion of depth and movement, a feast for the eyes. Be sure to look for the youthful masterpiece by Giambattista Tiepolo, ‘Christ Carrying the Cross,’ among the other remarkable works of art. This church holds two more early pieces by Tiepolo – ‘The Coronation with Thorns’ and ‘The Flagellation – creating a unique collection attributed to the artist’s early career. The church also retains delightful 15th-century tempera panels from the suppressed church of Le Vergini, a testament to the long and rich history of artistic expression in Venice. So step inside and discover a haven rich in history and artistic treasures in the Chiesa di Sant’Alvise, a timeless masterpiece in the heart of Venice.
