Hidden behind a screen of buildings on the Strada Nova, it’s easy to miss the Chiesa di Santa Sofia. It stands quietly amongst the shops and houses. It is a church with a fascinating history. The Chiesa di Santa Sofia has been around for centuries, dating back to the 11th century when it was built by the Gussoni family. This church has witnessed the ups and downs of Venice’s history. The church was rebuilt several times throughout the centuries, and its architecture reflects these changes. In the 1800s, the Strada Nova was built, cutting off the church’s original length. Under Napoleonic rule, the church was used as a warehouse for a time. The church was dispersed and the contents were lost. In 1836, it was reopened for Roman Catholic services. Today, it’s a reminder of Venice’s rich past and enduring spirit. While its interior may be less decorated than in the past, the Chiesa di Santa Sofia is still a beautiful and inspiring place. You can still see some of the original art from the past, such as the four statues of saints attributed to the workshop of Antonio Rizzo. These were originally in the church of the Servi, but they have found their way to the Chiesa di Santa Sofia. And so, here we are, standing before the modest facade, which is all that remains of the Chiesa di Santa Sofia in these modern times.
