On a hill named after the delicate jasmine flower, stands the Chiesa di Santa Maria Mediatrice. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Mediatrice is a magnificent example of postwar sacred architecture in Rome. It was designed by Giovanni Muzio, the same architect who designed the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. Construction began in 1940 and was completed in 1950.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Mediatrice is renowned for its sober external monumentality and rich interior decoration. The exterior, clad in brown brick with travertine limestone accents, hints at the treasures within. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking sight.

The church features stunning mosaics adorning the low nave dome, depicting the Church Militant, Suffering, and Triumphant. These intricate mosaics are a collaborative masterpiece by Giorgio Quaroni, Adriano Alessandrini, and Ugo Chluryia. As you continue your exploration, you’ll discover two side altars. The left altar, dedicated to Our Lady Mediatrix, showcases a remarkable relief by Francesco Nagni. The right altar, dedicated to St. Francis, features a poignant depiction of his stigmata by Ivan Mestrovic.

Finally, don’t miss the awe-inspiring fresco by Gisberto Ceracchini. It graces the apse of the choir, depicting the Glories of the Franciscan Order in vibrant detail. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Mediatrice is not just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and the beauty of artistic expression.
