Did you know a touch of Prague graces Trieste? Right here, nestled within the verdant embrace of Villa Revoltella’s park, stands the Chiesa di San Pasquale Baylon. This neo-Romanesque gem, with its Greek cross layout, isn’t purely Italian. Its design sprang from the mind of Prague-born architect Josef Andreas Kranner. He oversaw its construction from 1863 to 1866. Bishop Bartolomeo Legat consecrated the Chiesa di San Pasquale Baylon on May 17, 1867. The church’s benefactor, Baron Pasquale Revoltella, rests beneath the church in a crypt alongside his mother, Domenica. Their sarcophagi lie in quiet repose, a testament to the baron’s deep connection to this place. Revoltella’s legacy extends beyond the church walls. His will established a foundation. This foundation ensured the education and spiritual guidance of the local villagers. It also stipulated two annual masses. One on May 17, the feast day of San Pasquale Baylon. The other on August 15, the feast of the Assumption. Inside the Chiesa di San Pasquale Baylon, art comes alive on the walls of the two side arms. Domenico Fabris, in 1864, adorned them with frescoes. These frescoes depict five scenes from the life of San Pasquale. The Chiesa di San Pasquale Baylon isn’t merely a place of worship. It’s a fusion of cultures, a monument to familial devotion, and a vibrant canvas of sacred art.
