Whispers of a miracle echoed through the canals, drawing curious Venetians to the Chiesa di San Marziale. It was the early 14th century. A statue of the Virgin Mary, carved by a humble shepherd named Rustico in Rimini, had miraculously arrived in Venice. This divine gift brought the Bocchi family to pour their wealth into rebuilding the ancient church, already dedicated to San Marziale since the 9th century. The Chiesa di San Marziale, as we see it today, however, is not the one touched by that miracle. That structure fell victim to time. The current building arose between 1693 and 1714, upon the foundations of its predecessor. It was consecrated in 1721, thanks to the patronage of Pietro Barbarigo. The exterior of the Chiesa di San Marziale won’t leave you breathless. Its facade is austere, a stark contrast to the treasures within. Inside the Chiesa di San Marziale, seek out the altar dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Graces. There, nestled in a niche, resides a replica of Rustico’s miraculous statue, a tangible link to the church’s humble origins. Look up. The ceiling of the Chiesa di San Marziale unfolds a vibrant narrative painted by Sebastiano Ricci. Scenes of the statue’s arrival in Venice, the apotheosis of San Marziale, and Rustico’s vision of angels sculpting the Madonna intertwine in a breathtaking spectacle. And then there are the altarpieces. One, a masterpiece by Tintoretto, depicts San Marziale in Glory, flanked by Saints Peter and Paul. This was Tintoretto’s very first altarpiece. Also gracing the Chiesa di San Marziale are works by Giulia Lama, four powerful canvases, including portraits of the Evangelists Matthew and Mark. The high altar, a marvel of Baroque sculpture, commands attention. Its elaborate design, possibly the work of Tommaso Rues, features Christ as Ruler of the World, surrounded by saints and angels. The Chiesa di San Marziale also holds an important piece by the esteemed artist, Antonio Vassilacchi, known as L’Aliense. His Resurrection brings the drama and hope of the biblical story to life. Though a Titian once graced these walls, depicting the encounter of Tobias and the Angel, it now resides in the nearby Church of Santa Maria dell’Orto. The Chiesa di San Marziale is more than stone and mortar. It is a testament to faith, miracles, and the enduring power of art.
