Imagine a church standing here for centuries. That’s Chiesa di San Luca. A parish church first stood here in the 11th century. The Dandolo and Pizzamano families were its patrons.

Over time, Chiesa di San Luca was restored. A major reconstruction occurred in the early 1600s. It was reconsecrated in 1617. The facade you see is simple. Step inside for a richer experience.

The interior boasts rich decoration. Sebastiano Santi frescoed the walls and ceiling. Look for his depiction of San Luca, the church’s patron. He also painted San Paterniano and San Benedetto.

Notice the main altar. It was built in 1581. Above it hangs an altarpiece by Paolo Veronese. It shows the Virgin appearing to Saint Luke. He is writing the Gospel. It is a magnificent sight.

In the right lateral chapel, find another altarpiece. Palma il Giovane painted the Virgin and Saints. It is a beautiful work.

On the second altar to the left, see a different scene. Carlo Loth depicted Lorenzo Giustiniani. He was the first Patriarch of Venice. The painting shows him defeating the plague. He is also distributing alms.

Chiesa di San Luca has a single nave. Apsidal chapels line the walls. Side altars are placed along the walls. It creates an intimate space.

The church suffered a partial collapse in 1827. Sebastiano Santi restored it in 1832. The portal is an important architectural element. It is worth a closer look.

Many prominent figures are buried in Chiesa di San Luca. Pietro Aretino is one. Lodovico Dolce is another. These men of letters found their final resting place here.

Chiesa di San Luca has a long history. It reflects the changing tastes of Venice. The original structure had three naves. It followed a Venetian-Byzantine style. Renovations changed the architecture. The original orientation remained the same.

The church faces a small foundation. The facade is a gabled type with a single order. This gives it a unique appearance.

Chiesa di San Luca stands as a testament to Venetian history. It has witnessed centuries of change. Its art and architecture tell a story. This story speaks of faith, art and Venetian pride.
