Amidst the grandeur of Turin, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo stands as a testament to a duke’s vow and an architect’s ingenuity. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo’s story begins not within its walls, but on a battlefield in northern France. In 1557, Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy led the Habsburg armies to victory against the French at the Battle of Saint-Quentin. This pivotal battle, fought on the feast day of St. Lawrence, shaped the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis and restored Turin to the duke’s control. In gratitude, the duke vowed to build a church dedicated to St. Lawrence. Initially, he rededicated the existing Church of Santa Maria ad Presepae. However, the grand Chiesa di San Lorenzo we see today began construction in 1634. The architectural genius Guarino Guarini took the reins in 1668. Guarini’s design for the Chiesa di San Lorenzo is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. He pushed the boundaries of conventional design, creating a dynamic interplay of shapes and light. The seemingly simple square ground plan transforms into an octagon, then a Greek cross, and finally a circular base for the dome, crowned by an octagonal lantern. This intricate layering of geometric forms reflects Guarini’s innovative spirit. Look closely at the dome of the Chiesa di San Lorenzo. Eight intersecting arches form an eight-pointed star, reminiscent of mosque architecture. Smaller windows punctuate the spaces between these arches. The interplay of light and shadow on these geometric features creates a peculiar optical illusion. Some say they can see a face within the dome, a “face of the devil” formed by the windows. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo also boasts a hidden dome above the high altar. Separated from the nave by a convex and concave archway, the altar is bathed in natural light from this concealed source. This innovative use of light, inspired by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, adds to the church’s mystical atmosphere. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo is more than just a church; it is a testament to history, faith, and architectural innovation. As you stand before it, take a moment to appreciate the layers of meaning embedded within its walls. From a duke’s vow on a distant battlefield to the architect’s daring vision, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo whispers tales of the past.
