Whispers of history echo within these walls. Before you stands the Chiesa di San Grato a testament to time and faith. This unassuming church in Turin’s Mongreno district holds centuries of stories. Originally dedicated to Santa Maria it was renamed in 1630. The new dedication to San Grato Bishop of Aosta is unusual for Turin. It reflects the presence of many foreigners from the Ossola Valley and Chambery. These were people who bought land to obtain citizenship.

The Chiesa di San Grato wasn’t always as it appears today. Early records date back to 1479. In 1492 an altar was consecrated. The adjacent cemetery was blessed. The church received full parish rights in 1512. Significant expansions occurred in the late 1700s completed in 1776. Further expansion happened in the 1830s and 40s. Restoration work was carried out in 1990.

The church overlooks Mongreno’s valleys. Its rectangular design features ribbed brick vaults. The presbytery houses a raised altar. A wooden balustrade separates it from the nave. Two small chapels are on either side. They are dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario and the Immaculate Conception.

The facade boasts two pilasters supporting a triangular pediment. Two frescoes decorate the facade. They depict the Madonna del Rosario and San Grato. The sturdy bell tower rises from the north side. It features round arches and a four-pitched roof. Inside the church are magnificent frescoes from 1424. Jacobus pictor civis Yporegie Giacomino da Ivrea created them. The frescoes depict Saint Peter and Saint Andrew patrons of Pavone Canavese a town near Turin.

The Chiesa di San Grato is more than just a building. It’s a living chronicle of Turin’s rich history. It reflects the ebb and flow of the city’s religious and social life. It speaks of faith resilience and community. Step inside and feel the weight of centuries. Let the whispers of the past surround you. Let the timeless beauty of the Chiesa di San Grato inspire you. This small church in Mongreno holds a huge legacy. It is a silent witness to the passage of time and the enduring power of belief.
