Did the humble carpenter of Nazareth ever imagine a church dedicated to him in the bustling city of Turin? Right here, before us, stands the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, a testament to the enduring devotion to Saint Joseph. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of Turin’s history. This church arose from the transformation of a former monastery, the Monastero delle Madri del Santissimo Crocifisso. Around 1681, the Ministers of the Infirm established themselves in Turin. They initiated the construction of the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, reshaping the old monastery church. The architect Carlo Emanuele Lanfranchi took the reins of this ambitious project. Lanfranchi’s design imbued the Chiesa di San Giuseppe with the dramatic flair of the Baroque style. Its Latin cross plan and dome, crowned with a cylindrical lantern, are characteristic of this era. Inside the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, art and history intertwine. Sebastiano Taricco’s altarpiece, “Transito di San Giuseppe,” graces the main altar, a poignant depiction of Saint Joseph’s death. Another notable canvas portrays “San Camillo con la Vergine del Milocco.” Two striking statues, “La Maddalena” and “San Giovanni Battista,” further enrich the church’s artistic treasures. The high altar, a vision of marble and spiraling columns, is a testament to the patronage of Giovanni Battista Trucchi di Levaldigi, dating back to 1696. While the church’s interior has largely retained its Baroque splendor, the facade has seen changes. The original frescoes by Giovanni Battista Alberoni, which created an illusion of grand architecture, were erased in 1854. The present facade, designed by architect Giuseppe Ferrari d’Orsara, dates from 1909. So, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe stands before us, a blend of resilience and transformation, a place where the spirit of Saint Joseph and the artistic heart of Turin converge.
