A church at the site of Chiesa di San Giovanni Nuovo was present by the 10th century. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Nuovo, also known as San Zan Novo, stands as a testament to Venice’s rich history. The church we see today was rebuilt in 1762. This followed designs by Matteo Lucchesi, the uncle of the renowned artist Piranesi. While Lucchesi envisioned a grand Palladian façade, it sadly remains unfinished to this day. Step inside the Chiesa di San Giovanni Nuovo, and you’ll find a single nave adorned with majestic Corinthian columns. The interior, though smaller than churches like the Redentore, exudes a unique charm. Two lateral chapels flank the nave, each whispering tales of centuries past. At the heart of the church lies the main altar. It features a captivating canvas by Francesco Maggiotto, depicting the martyrdom of St. John the Evangelist. Flanking this masterpiece are two smaller works by Fabio Canal: the Sacrifice of Abraham and the Sacrifice of Melchisedech. Look closely, and you’ll discover a poignant piece from the 14th century housed in the second lateral chapel: a polychrome wood crucifix, a testament to the enduring power of faith. As you exit the Chiesa di San Giovanni Nuovo, take note of the bell tower. It stands as a silent sentinel, a vestige of the original church that once graced this sacred ground.
