The Chiesa di San Giovanni Decollato began as a small church. It served the few villagers of Guardiella. Documents show its existence as early as 1338. It was dedicated to Saints John and Pelagio. The Chapter of the Cathedral of San Giusto cared for it. This included the city’s periphery.
By the 1800s, the population had grown. The small church could no longer accommodate everyone. A new, larger place of worship was needed. Instead of expanding the old church, the decision was made to build a new one.
The municipality of Trieste approved the construction. Work began in 1856. Giuseppe Sforzi designed the Chiesa di San Giovanni Decollato. On June 27, 1858, Bishop Bartolomeo Legat consecrated it.
