A breathtaking white marble facade gleams before you. This is the Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore. Its beauty captivates all who gaze upon it.

The Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore is more than just a church. It stands as a testament to Venetian history and architectural genius. Andrea Palladio designed this magnificent basilica. It was built between 1566 and 1610. The church’s brilliant white marble shimmers above the blue waters of the lagoon. It forms the stunning focal point of the view from the Riva degli Schiavoni.

But its story began long before Palladio’s vision. A church stood on this very island as early as 790. In 982 the Doge Tribuno Memmo gifted the island to the Benedictine order. They established a monastery. Unfortunately an earthquake in 1223 destroyed everything. The church and monastery were rebuilt. The new church however stood in a different location. It was farther back near a small square. Cloisters stood before it until their demolition in 1516. By 1521 the monks planned a complete rebuilding.

Palladio arrived in Venice in 1560. He was already improving the monastery’s refectory. In 1565 he was commissioned to design a new church. His model was approved in 1566. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of the Pope that same year. Sadly Palladio died in 1580 before its completion. However the main structure was finished by 1575. The choir and facade remained unfinished. The interior decoration followed later.

Palladio’s genius is evident in the facade. He masterfully combined a classical temple facade with the form of a Christian church. He superimposed two facades. One wide pediment covers the nave and aisles. The other narrower pediment sits on top. It is supported by giant columns. This solution echoes his slightly earlier work at San Francesco della Vigna.

Step inside. The interior is bright. Massive columns and pilasters grace the undecorated white walls. Tintoretto’s monumental paintings adorn the presbytery. They depict The Last Supper and The Jews in the Desert. The latter foreshadows the Eucharist. The Chapel of the Dead houses Tintoretto’s Entombment of Christ. The monks carefully controlled the chapels. Unlike many Venetian churches they did not sell them to families. Some altars belonged to notable families. Their decoration however remained under monastic control.

The bell tower another story. Built in 1467 it collapsed in 1774. It was rebuilt in neo-classical style by 1791. Today a lift allows visitors to ascend for breathtaking panoramic views of Venice.

As you stand here absorbing the atmosphere of the Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore remember this. It’s a living testament to faith architectural brilliance and the enduring spirit of Venice. It’s a place where history art and faith intertwine. A truly unforgettable experience.
