Look at how elegantly the Chiesa di San Felice stands here in Cannaregio. Built on a Greek cross plan, it presents a charming facade with pilasters adorned with Corinthian capitals. It may not shout like many of Venice’s other churches, but if you listen closely, it has a story to tell. As with many buildings in this city, the tale of the Chiesa di San Felice is one of destruction and renewal. It was originally founded near the end of the 10th century by the Gallina family. The first documented mention was in 1117, and in 1267 it was reconsecrated by the patriarch of Caorle and Jesolo after undergoing extensive renovations. But by 1531, the church’s state threatened to collapse so it was torn down and rebuilt. Its current form follows the style of Mauro Codussi, a renowned architect. Today, while still part of the vibrant fabric of Venice, there is something almost solemn about this church. It’s almost as if it is taking a moment to breathe, to reflect on the many lifetimes, the many stories it has witnessed. When you’re inside, you’ll notice a baptistery font, something that might not immediately spring to mind when you imagine a church. This font is where, on the 29th of March 1693, a young Carlo Rezzonico was baptized. He would eventually become Pope Clement XIII. So, if you look around, it’s like the wall itself whispers the tales of this church, a constant reminder that we are always part of a bigger history, a bigger story. The Chiesa di San Felice, a timeless landmark whispering tales of Venice’s past, is more than just a building it is a living testament to the resilience and beauty that make this city so unique. I invite you to explore the church and its surroundings to dive into its rich story and make it part of your Venetian experience.
