Do those bones behind the altar really belong to a dragon? You might be surprised to learn that Chiesa di San Donato in Murano has a rather curious claim to fame. While the church itself, dating back to the 7th century, is a marvel with its Byzantine mosaic pavement and rich history, it’s the presence of those unusually large ribs that truly captures the imagination. Legend has it that these bones, measuring over a meter long, belonged to a fearsome dragon slain by none other than Saint Donatus himself. The story goes that Doge Domenico Michiel, returning from a crusade in the 12th century, brought back not only the relics of Saint Donatus from Cephalonia, but also the bones of the dragon the saint had vanquished. While scientifically speaking, the bones likely belonged to a large extinct mammal, the legend persists. It adds an extra layer of intrigue to the Chiesa di San Donato, a place where history, artistry, and folklore intertwine to create a truly unforgettable experience.
