A rose window a relic of a bygone era greets you. This is the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo in Trieste. Its story is etched in stone and whispered on the wind.

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo stands proudly in Barcola a Trieste suburb. It wasn’t always this grand structure. Long ago a small chapel dedicated to Saint Bartholomew stood here. Records from 1338 mention it. In 1462 Pope Pius II then Enea Silvio Piccolomini granted the chapel special indulgences.

The tiny chapel grew. In 1785 it became a curacy. A new larger church rose two years later. It expanded further in 1838 and 1892 when it finally achieved parish status. The church we see today is a result of extensive renovations. These occurred between 1930 and 1935. Architect Giovanni Bernè oversaw the transformation.

That beautiful rose window? It’s a traveler through time. It adorned the old San Pietro church in Trieste. That church was demolished in 1870 to make way for Piazza Unità d’Italia. This 14th-century window is even older. It was reused in 1602 when San Pietro also known as San Rocco was rebuilt. The main altar too has a fascinating history. It originated in Trieste’s cathedral.

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo continues to evolve. In 1952 a monumental Baroque altar arrived. This came from a Venetian chapel. Artist Antonio Bosa facilitated the move. The altar a masterpiece by Giovanni Comino and Enrico Meringio depicts scenes of Christ. It features statues of the evangelists Luke and Matthew along with angels. The altar’s tabernacle is a marvel of polychrome marble. It was originally in San Giusto Cathedral. Other altars such as those dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the Madonna del Rosario also came from the cathedral.

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo is more than a church. It’s a living testament to Trieste’s rich history. It combines the old and the new blending centuries of faith and artistry. It holds the echoes of prayers whispers of history and the quiet reverence of generations. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Absorb its story. Feel the weight of time within its walls. The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo awaits your reflection.
