A breathtaking octagonal structure. That’s the Chiesa delle Stimmate di San Francesco d’Assisi in Turin. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

This beautiful church wasn’t always here. Its story begins in the 1920s. A growing population needed a new spiritual center. Monsignor Emilio Feliciano Vacha. The priest of the Immacolata Concezione saw an opportunity. A simple sign ‘land for sale’ changed everything. He purchased the land. The year was 1926.

Engineer Corrado Meano designed the church. He envisioned a simple yet elegant building. A modern design with clean lines and a solemn atmosphere. The church’s construction reflected the era’s architectural style. The octagonal shape is unique. Eight pillars support the arches. Four galleries surround the main space. A large blue cupola dominates the structure. A lantern crowns the cupola. It adds to the church’s soaring height.

The interior is stark. Meano preferred a minimalist approach. No frescoes adorn the walls. Only the apse holds statues of Christ and St Francis. A crucifix with Mary and John sits above the altar. Originally. The church featured a beautiful balustrade. It was made of red Levanto marble and Italian cipollino marble. However after the Second Vatican Council. This balustrade was removed. The altar was moved closer to the congregation. The church’s simple elegance shines through.

The church’s consecration took place on October 4 1929. Don Emilio Vacha Monsignor Vacha’s nephew became the first parish priest. He oversaw the church’s growth. The post-war years brought challenges. The church suffered damage during an air raid in 1942. Repairs were necessary. The expanding population also demanded new buildings. A catechism school a cinema-theater and a kindergarten were added.

The late 1970s brought significant changes. Local industries closed. The parish population declined. Today the Chiesa delle Stimmate di San Francesco d’Assisi stands as a reminder of Turin’s transformation. It’s a beacon of faith in a constantly changing city. This humble yet magnificent church continues to serve its community. A symbol of hope and perseverance. Its story reflects the spirit of Turin itself. A blend of history progress and unwavering faith.
