A towering presence. That’s the first impression of the Chiesa del Santo Volto. Its stark modern lines rise against the Turin skyline. A striking contrast to the city’s historic architecture.

This is the Chiesa del Santo Volto. The first church built in Turin in the 21st century. It stands as a testament to faith and urban renewal. Located in Borgata Ceronda. This was once a heavily industrialized area. The area housed factories like Michelin and Teksid. These factories shaped the landscape for decades.

The transformation is remarkable. Once filled with the roar of machinery. The area is now home to a vast park. A green lung for the city. A testament to the revitalization of the space. Cardinal Poletto himself championed the need for a church here. He wanted to serve the new residents of the area. The result? A breathtaking modern structure. The Chiesa del Santo Volto. Built in a mere five years.

Architect Mario Botta’s vision is unforgettable. The church resembles a nuclear reactor. Seven 35-meter-high towers surround the central nave. Natural light floods the interior. It pours through the hollow towers. The interior can seat 700 people. The cylindrical cupola sits atop the nave. It’s a striking pyramidal shape. A series of filled and empty modules rotate around it.

A poignant detail remains from the area’s industrial past. An old chimney stands beside the church. Now a modern campanile. A metal spiral wraps around the chimney reaching up to the cross. The bells themselves are not at the top. They rest at the chimney’s base. They are enclosed in a metal frame near the church entrance.

The church’s interior is equally impressive. The white altar faces the city. Behind the altar. The Santo Volto. The face of Christ from the Shroud of Turin. It is recreated in a pixelated style. A powerful artistic choice. The whole complex is vast. It measures approximately 12,000 square meters. It includes a multi-purpose hall. It also houses offices for the Metropolitan Curia of the Archdiocese of Turin.

The cost of this project was substantial. Around 30 million euros. The Archdiocese contributed 12 million. The rest came from the CRT Foundation. Also the Compagnia di San Paolo and the Piedmont Region. The construction generated some controversy. Some questioned the large expenditure. The debate highlighted differing priorities. The need for social support versus grand religious architecture. Nonetheless. The Chiesa del Santo Volto stands as a bold statement. A symbol of faith and rebirth in the heart of Turin. A unique place to visit. And reflect on faith and renewal.
