The story of the Chiesa Cattolica Parrocchiale Sacro Cuore Di Gesù began in the early 1900s. The bishop Francesco Saverio Nagl invited some Jesuit Fathers to Trieste. They had been away since 1773. Local politics weren’t easy for the Jesuits. Initially, they focused on preaching and spiritual exercises. Later, they started pastoral care in the city center.
In 1908, Bishop Nagl declared his intention. He wanted to build a church in Trieste. It would honor the Sacred Heart. It would also commemorate Pope Pius X’s 50th priestly anniversary. It was also to celebrate Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria’s 60th year of reign.
The first stone was laid on June 26, 1908. Architect Mario Ceradini of Turin designed the church. Construction moved quickly. On January 22, 1910, the church was blessed. Bishop Nagl dedicated it to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Initially, its territory was part of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo parish. The Chiesa Cattolica Parrocchiale Sacro Cuore Di Gesù officially became a parish on December 8, 1948. In 1969, the church was entrusted to the Lombard-Venetian Province. This was by the Society of Jesus. Civil recognition followed on September 7, 1971.

The left altar is dedicated to Saint Joseph. Archduchess Maria Josefa, mother of Charles I, donated it. The church also features beautiful stained glass. Painted decorations adorn the interior.
