Can you hear the whispers of ancient wisdom echoing around us? We are standing before the serene Chi Lin Nunnery. This remarkable sanctuary offers respite from Hong Kong’s bustling Diamond Hill. It is a testament to peace and architectural brilliance.

The Chi Lin Nunnery was founded in 1934. It began as a retreat for Buddhist nuns. In 1948 it expanded to a “conglin” for nuns to pursue religious practice. A Buddhist donated a mansion for this purpose.

Let’s step closer to admire its unique design. The Chi Lin Nunnery was rebuilt in 1998. It follows the traditional Tang Dynasty architecture. Notice anything unusual? The entire structure is crafted from cypress wood. It does not use a single nail. This makes it the world’s largest hand-made wooden building. Traditional Chinese architecture uses interlocking systems cut into the wood. This demonstrates mankind’s harmony with nature.

The design is based on a Sukhavati drawing found in the Mogao Caves. Look at the statues in the temple halls. They depict the Sakyamuni Buddha and the goddess of mercy Guanyin. These are made from gold, clay, wood, and stone.

The complex includes sixteen halls, a library, a school, a pagoda, a bell tower, and a drum tower. It spans over 33000 square metres. The Chi Lin Nunnery buildings stand as the only structures built in this style in modern Hong Kong.

Did you see the lighting design? Small spotlights illuminate the ground floor and roof. LED strips light the lower entrance stairs. This enhances the building’s original design.

Facing the Chi Lin Nunnery you will find the Nan Lian Garden. It is a classical Chinese garden built in the Tang Dynasty style. The Chi Lin Nunnery maintains this scenic garden. It covers 35000 square metres.

Chi Lin Nunnery offers a journey back in time. It showcases the beauty and precision of Tang Dynasty architecture. It is a sanctuary of serenity and cultural richness. Take a moment to appreciate the tranquil atmosphere.
