From a humble fishing village to the pinnacle of piracy, Cheung Po Tsai’s story echoes around Cheung Po Tau. Cheung Po Tsai, whose name means “Cheung Po the Kid”, wasn’t born into a life of plunder. Born in 1783, young Cheung Po was abducted at the age of 15 by the notorious pirate Cheng I and forced into a life he never imagined. Cheung Po Tau, a peak once known as Table Hill, stands as a silent witness to the dramatic events that shaped this pirate’s destiny. Cheng I, recognizing the boy’s potential, adopted him and groomed him for leadership. Cheung Po Tsai quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a skilled and ruthless pirate. After Cheng I’s death in 1807, Cheung Po Tsai shared command of the Red Flag Fleet with Cheng I’s widow, Ching Shih. Their combined forces terrorized the South China Sea, amassing a fleet of over 600 ships and tens of thousands of followers. Cheung Po Tsai’s influence stretched far and wide, his name whispered in fear and awe. Legends tell of Cheung Po Tsai’s hidden treasures, scattered in caves across Hong Kong’s islands. Cheung Chau Island is home to one such cave, said to be a small natural cavern where he once stashed his loot. Cheung Po Tau itself, with its commanding views of the surrounding waters, may have served as a lookout point for the pirate fleet. While he ruthlessly commanded his fleet, Cheung Po Tsai had a code. He enforced strict rules, ensuring fair distribution of loot among his crew. He also implemented a policy of respect towards captured women, a surprising act of decency in the brutal world of piracy. The tides turned for Cheung Po Tsai in 1809 after a series of defeats by the Portuguese Navy at the Battle of the Tiger’s Mouth. In 1810, he finally surrendered to the Qing government, accepting an amnesty and keeping his hard-won spoils. He then became a naval officer, using his pirate skills to hunt down his former comrades. Cheung Po Tau, towering over the landscape, symbolizes both the rise and fall of Cheung Po Tsai. From pirate lord to Qing colonel, his story remains a thrilling chapter in Hong Kong’s maritime history.
