Cheung Chau Alliance Church

Tucked away on Cheung Chau Island, the Cheung Chau Alliance Church holds a captivating story. It’s more than just a place of worship. The Cheung Chau Alliance Church traces its roots back to 1899, not here on this tranquil island, but in Wuzhou, Guangxi Province, mainland China. It was founded by Dr. Robert Glover, a medical missionary with a vision. Imagine the bustling mainland city as the backdrop for the church’s early days. The church thrived there for decades, becoming a cornerstone of the community. But history had other plans. In 1949, with the rise of communism in mainland China, the church faced an uncertain future. Dr. William C. Newbern, recognizing the looming threat, made a difficult decision. He led the congregation on a journey of faith, relocating the entire seminary to Cheung Chau Island in 1950. Here, amidst the quiet fishing villages and breathtaking scenery, the Cheung Chau Alliance Church found a new home. The transition wasn’t easy. But the spirit of the church remained strong. The name officially changed to Alliance Bible Seminary in 1955, reflecting its academic focus. The seminary quickly adapted and continued its mission of training future missionaries and church leaders. By 1958, they awarded their first Bachelor’s degree, a testament to their perseverance and commitment to education. Over the years, the Cheung Chau Alliance Church has not only served as a spiritual haven but also as a center of learning and growth. Its graduates have played a pivotal role in establishing Christian and Missionary Alliance churches across Hong Kong. Today, standing before the Cheung Chau Alliance Church, you can almost hear the echoes of its past.
