“Ready for a friendly match?” That’s probably what you would have heard here at Cheltenham Park, a sports complex in Cheltenham, Sydney. Cheltenham Park has a history of transformation and community engagement.
Cheltenham Park is located on Castle Howard Road. It has benefited from new facilities thanks to the Sydney Metro North West Rail Line project. Transport for NSW worked with the Hornsby Shire Council. Together, they collaborated with local sporting groups and Bushcare volunteers. The goal was to design and provide input into these new facilities.
Cheltenham Park now boasts three new multi-purpose courts. These are sized and marked for netball. The surface finishes meet competitive netball standards. There is also a half-court multi-purpose practice area. Floodlighting illuminates all courts for evening use. Cricket enthusiasts will appreciate the two resurfaced cricket nets and run-up area. A new playground area features a soft-fall play surface.
A new community building stands to the north of Cheltenham Oval. A new netball storage and amenities building is adjacent to the courts and children’s playground. The expanded car park area offers improved access from Castle Howard Road.
The community building has home and away team shower and changing rooms. There are also separate referee changing rooms. Secure storage space is available for nominated sporting associations. Public toilet facilities are included. A canteen provides refreshments. A multi-purpose meeting space accommodates various activities. Storage space for Council maintenance equipment completes the building.
Cheltenham itself is a suburb in Northern Sydney. It is known for its leafy streets and affluent residences. It is located 18 kilometers north-west of Sydney’s central business district. Cheltenham maintains a distinct identity.
Cheltenham took its name from a house built by William Chorley. He was a Sydney tailor and men’s outfitter. He named his house after his birthplace in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Chorley requested a station be built here and named after his property when it opened in 1898.
Cheltenham Girls High School opened in 1957.
