Che Kung Tau. A name that echoes with legends and the scent of incense. Here, nestled between Tai Wai and Che Kung Temple MTR stations, stands a vibrant testament to faith and history. Thousands flock to Che Kung Tau, especially during the Lunar New Year, to pay respects to the deity and seek blessings. This isn’t the original Che Kung Temple though. That structure, a smaller, older building, sits quietly behind its grand successor, only occasionally opening its doors to the public. The current Che Kung Tau, completed in 1994, is a much larger, Japanese-style structure, built to accommodate the ever-growing number of worshippers. Its walls, plastered with faux brick lines, and roofs adorned with green glazed ceramic tiles, may have diminished some of the temple’s historical authenticity according to some, but its significance remains undimmed. Inside Che Kung Tau, a giant statue of the Song Dynasty general Che Kung dominates the main hall. He stands as a symbol of protection, a reputation earned not just through military prowess but also through a fascinating tale. Legend says that during a devastating plague in Sha Tin during the late Ming Dynasty, villagers discovered historical accounts of Che Kung’s ability to quell not only rebellions but also epidemics. A temple was quickly erected in his honor, and, miraculously, the plague subsided the very day construction finished. Was it divine intervention or simply the power of hope? That’s for you to decide. Beside the statue stands the iconic fan-bladed wheel of fortune. Worshippers believe that turning it three times brings good luck. Give it a spin. Who knows, fortune may favor you. If you’re curious about your future, fortune tellers are readily available within the temple. Che Kung Tau is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living, breathing piece of Hong Kong’s history, a testament to the enduring power of belief, and a vibrant hub of cultural activity. As you leave Che Kung Tau, remember the story of the general who quelled a plague and the thousands who continue to seek his blessings.
