Seventy years of stories. That’s what these walls of Chatswood Interchange could tell.

Chatswood Interchange isn’t just a shopping centre. It’s a vital transport hub a bustling heart of the lower North Shore. Opened in 1988 it initially housed around 30 specialty stores. No anchor tenants. Just a modest collection of shops integrated with the Chatswood railway station.

But Chatswood Interchange’s story is one of transformation. The construction of the Epping to Chatswood railway line brought about a dramatic change. The original Interchange was demolished in 2005. A temporary station was built. This was all part of a significant rebuilding project. This included a new railway station bus interchange and a much larger shopping centre.

The private developers CRI Chatswood encountered difficulties. They went into receivership. This resulted in delays. The shopping centre remained vacant for several years. Construction on the towers was drastically delayed.

Finally in 2014 Chatswood Interchange reopened. This time much grander. A 2000sqm Woolworths store opened on the ground level. A BWS store also opened. Many kiosks gradually opened too. Even the post office found a new home. The top level opened in 2015 with The District food court. This offered a wide selection of cuisines including Chinese Japanese Thai and Italian.

Today Chatswood Interchange is a vibrant hub. It’s expected to reach a value of $634 million by 2026. It supports trade for over 75150 people. It’s a testament to perseverance. It’s a place where history and progress intertwine. A place where the past whispers its secrets to a bright future. It’s more than just an interchange it’s a living breathing part of Chatswood’s story.
