“Who started Chatswood Baptist Church?” someone asks. The answer is shrouded in a bit of mystery. What is known is quite fascinating. A small group of Christians began meeting in North Sydney. They desired community and fellowship.
This group eventually bought a hall. It was located on the corner of Orchard Rd and Albert Avenue in Chatswood. In October 1919, the church officially identified as a Baptist Church. Rev. Swan was their leader. At that time, Chatswood Baptist Church had 35 members.
Therefore, the church dates its beginning from 1919. The church actually began earlier. Believers met to encourage one another. They gathered around the Word of God. They preached the gospel in the Chatswood community. The commencement was before 1919, maybe not too much before.
Originally, people met in a small wooden building. It even had a tin roof. The first dedicated church building was completed in 1919. The first service was held on Sunday, December 6, 1919. Imagine the excitement and anticipation of that day.
Over the years, the buildings have changed. Needs evolved and expanded. Halls were added and removed. The property grew. It went from one small block to four on the corner of Orchard Rd and Albert Ave. Additions were last completed in 2015. These additions provided space for ministry and growth.
While the buildings have changed over the years, one thing remains constant. Chatswood Baptist Church is committed to the Word of God. It is dedicated to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. This church has a strong evangelical heritage. It continues today as they faithfully declare the Word of God.
They believe the gospel is the power of salvation. It is only through faith in Christ that people are saved. This commitment to Christ has not changed. The gospel and the Bible remain central to their faith.
Chatswood Baptist Church is a friendly community. It is diverse. People of all ages and many cultures attend. They love and trust Jesus. They share that love with the people of Chatswood.
Chatswood Baptist Church sees itself joining God’s work in the world. Each member gives of themselves. They share their skills, time, energy, and resources. This supports the ministry of the church. It also demonstrates worship to God.
Chatswood Baptist Church offers Sunday services. Morning Church meets at 9:30 am. Evening Church meets at 5:30 pm. These services are opportunities for worship and fellowship.
The morning service includes the whole family. There is a mix of hymns and contemporary songs. Chatswood Baptist Church provides a children’s program. It’s called KLAG which means Kids Learning About God. There is also a program for years 7 to 9 in high school.
