Christmas 1910. A buzz rippled through Leura. The grand opening of Chateau Napier, or simply “The Napier” as it was first known, was the talk of the town. We stand now where this imposing guesthouse once graced the corner of Bathurst Road and Leura Mall. Imagine the scene: horse-drawn carriages arriving, their occupants eager to witness the unveiling of Leura’s newest gem. The Lord Mayor of Sydney himself, Alderman Allen Taylor, presided over the festivities. A lavish dinner was held, attended by prominent Sydney businessmen and local dignitaries. The air filled with the clinking of silverware, specifically embossed with “The Napier,” some of which are now treasured artifacts of the Blue Mountains Historical Society. Chateau Napier quickly became a beloved mountain retreat. Its proprietor, Mrs. McManus, a relative of the McSweeney family who built the Chateau, managed the guesthouse for 25 years. In 1914, the Chateau expanded, adding a distinctive arched gateway with curved walls and a balustrade. It could accommodate up to 150 guests. During World War II, Chateau Napier sheltered students evacuated from Sydney’s Church of England Grammar School. They found refuge within its walls before moving to another location in Leura. The Chateau continued to operate after the war, changing hands a few times. But tragedy struck on December 2, 1957. Bushfires swept through Leura, gutting the grand Chateau Napier. It was later demolished. What we see today are remnants of that once vibrant hub, shaded by overgrown trees, a poignant reminder of a bygone era. The site remains vacant, yet its commanding views still offer a glimpse of the beauty that once drew so many to Chateau Napier.
