Gazing up at the Charles Kuen Kao Building, have you ever considered how profoundly this structure reflects the man it honors? The Charles Kuen Kao Building, part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, stands as a testament to a man who revolutionized communication. Charles K. Kao, born in Shanghai in 1933, found his calling in the world of fiber optics. He didn’t invent the fiber optic cable. However, he saw its potential. In the 1960s at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories, Kao relentlessly pursued the goal of purifying glass fibers. He knew that impurities were the key factor limiting light transmission. His breakthrough came in 1969 when he and M.W. Jones achieved a loss of only 4 dB/km in fused silica. This discovery paved the way for the high-speed internet we use today. The Charles Kuen Kao Building, where students now learn and innovate, is a fitting tribute to his foresight. Kao’s work didn’t stop with research. He dedicated himself to education, becoming the Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1987 to 1996. He oversaw the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering. He also fostered the growth of numerous research institutes, shaping the very university where this building stands. Kao received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009. It was a well-deserved recognition of his groundbreaking achievements. The Charles Kuen Kao Building, opened in 1996, represents not just bricks and mortar. It represents the enduring legacy of a man who dared to dream of a world connected by light.
