“Mecca of Excellence,” they call it. Right here at Charles H Flowers High School, that motto isn’t just a phrase. It’s a promise whispered in the hallways, shouted on the football field, and lived out in the classrooms. Charles H Flowers High School opened its doors in 2000, the first new high school in Prince George’s County in over two decades. Can you imagine the excitement? A brand new building, state-of-the-art facilities. This place was built for the future, a $30 million investment in the dreams of its students. Charles H Flowers High School isn’t just bricks and mortar, though. It’s a living testament to the man it’s named after, Charles Herbert Flowers, a local resident and a trainer of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen. The school board waived its usual rule of naming schools after someone posthumously. They recognized the impact Mr. Flowers had on the community, and he was even here to see the school open. Charles H Flowers High School serves a diverse population of students, from the City of Glenarden to the CDPs of Lake Arbor, Springdale, portions of Landover, and Summerfield. It also encompasses much of Mitchellville and Woodmore. This mix of communities creates a vibrant tapestry within these walls. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of science and technology, thanks to the school’s magnet program. Students here have access to 18 science labs, a testament to their focus on STEM education. Charles H Flowers High School also offers a variety of other opportunities. The auditorium, with its 750 seats, has witnessed countless performances, showcasing the talents of students involved in the Jaguar Players Drama Club, among others. Outside, the tennis courts and stadium echo with the cheers of athletes. The school even has a “treasure room,” stocked with supplies donated by experienced teachers for their newer colleagues. Charles H Flowers High School also has a rich history with school uniforms. From the strict dress code of grey slacks or skirts, white shirts, and hunter green blazers or sweater vests, to the more relaxed black khakis and forest green polos of today, uniforms have been a part of the school’s identity. Even now, students in the Science and Technology program, who often have internships during the day, wear a distinct all-black uniform with the word “INTERN.” Charles H Flowers High School boasts a diverse range of programs, including Project Lead the Way, the Academy of Finance, and the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.
