Charles Branch Stream Valley Park

In January 2024, something remarkable happened for Charles Branch Stream Valley Park. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) announced a major expansion. Over 500 acres of forested land were added to the park. This acquisition, totaling 537 acres, dramatically increased the size of Charles Branch Stream Valley Park. It signified a huge commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Prince George’s County. This addition, almost a square mile of land, became one of the most substantial land acquisitions in the county’s history. It was funded through the Department’s Capital Improvement Program. Located west of the Patuxent River, near Jug Bay and east of Maryland Route 301, the expanded park protects vital forestland and wildlife habitats. The expansion aligns with the county’s general plan, Plan Prince George’s 2035. It helps preserve the rural character of the area while restoring natural and man-made ecosystems. The land provides a crucial habitat for various species, including some that are rare, threatened, or endangered. The acquisition is a testament to the vision outlined in the Department’s Formula 2040, Priority Preservation Area Functional Master Plan, and Prince George’s County Climate Action Plan. These plans emphasize the importance of preserving and enhancing natural resources for the benefit of the community. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Program Open Space provided invaluable support for this project. The forested land offers significant ecosystem services, valued at approximately $1.1 million annually by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. These services include water quality protection, carbon sequestration, temperature moderation, air quality improvement, and habitat connectivity to the Patuxent River. The M-NCPPC is planning to develop Charles Branch Stream Valley Park into a premier conservation park. They are considering adding a natural surface trail system and other recreational opportunities. The park is expected to become a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and birdwatchers.
