Charles IV often called Pater patriae was an important personality. He shaped medieval Europe. He transformed Prague into the capital. It became the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Charles initiated numerous construction projects. He also founded Charles University in 1348. It was the oldest university in Central Europe. Many places bear his name such as the Charles Bridge.

Arnost J. Hähnel designed the Charles IV Monument. The bronze statue is about four meters tall. It stands on a pedestal of equal height. Charles IV holds a sword in one hand. In the other he holds the university’s foundation charter.

Look closely at the pedestal. It features allegories. They represent four faculties. These are theology medicine law and philosophy. Statues of four important figures adorn the monument’s corners. They were important during Charles IV’s reign.

Arnost of Pardubice was the first Prague archbishop. Jan Ocko of Vlasim was his successor. Benes of Kolovraty accompanied Charles IV to Rome for his coronation. Matthias of Arras was the first builder of St Vitus Cathedral.

Interestingly the Charles IV Monument was not unveiled until 1849. There were conflicts in 1848. The statue had to be encased for protection from damage.
