Hidden behind the charming village of Scherwiller stands Chapelle Sainte-Odile a testament to Alsace’s rich history. This unassuming chapel holds a captivating story spanning centuries. Originally built in 1118 it was dedicated to Saint Odile the patron saint of Alsace. Imagine the pilgrims who flocked here centuries ago seeking solace and spiritual guidance.
The Chapelle Sainte-Odile served as a parish church by 1298. A vicar ministered to the community. Legend says Saint Odile herself once resided in Scherwiller. Her nurse hailed from this very village. This connection made the chapel an important pilgrimage site. Its importance continued well into the 18th century. A significant relic a piece of Saint Odile’s tomb arrived in 1836. It was transported in a grand procession from Mont Sainte-Odile.
Tragedy struck in 1525 during the Battle of the Rustauds. Soldiers set fire to Scherwiller. The chapel along with other buildings was destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1528 a phoenix rising from the ashes. Philippe André Grandidier noted the chapel’s enduring popularity as a pilgrimage destination in the 18th century.
The chapel’s interior is full of artistic treasures. Look closely at the painting behind the gate to the left of the entrance. It depicts the infant Jesus close to his mother. A painting by Carola Sorg tells the story of Saint Odile. The original Vosges sandstone altar adorned with baroque wood boasts a reliquary of Saint Odile. The patron saint is depicted holding an abbess’s crook and a book. The Holy Family crowns the altar.
In 1853 the Viscount and Baron of Beaufranchet gifted the chapel to the commune of Scherwiller. They requested an annual mass for their souls. The municipal council accepted this generous donation. More recently a significant restoration began in 2015. The interior was renovated. A new bell tower identical to the original was built in 2017.
